Professor Elisa Izaurralde, 1959 - 2018

We mourn the loss of our colleague and mentor

On 30th of April 2018 our colleague, mentor and friend Elisa Izaurralde passed away at the age of only 58.

Elisa joined the MPI for Developmental Biology in 2005 to head the Department of Biochemistry. She was deeply involved in the promotion of young scientists and directed both the institute’s International PhD Program and the IMPRS “From Molecules to Organisms” until this year.

Elisa will be remembered for her outstanding contributions to our understanding of RNA biology and in particular to the molecular mechanisms of RNA transport and RNA silencing which are both crucial for the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Her research earned her the highest international reputation and was honored in 2008 with the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation.
